2022 Jazzfest Artists

ROBBEN FORD is one of today's premier electric guitarists, mainly known for his blues playing and his ability to be comfortable in a variety of musical contexts. Named one of the "100 Greatest Guitarists of the 20th Century" by Musician magazine, his innovative musicality triggered a revolution in electric blues guitar styling.

Five-time Grammy nominee Robben Ford has played with artists as diverse as Joni Mitchell, Jimmy Witherspoon, Miles Davis, George Harrison, Phil Lesh, Bonnie Raitt, Michael McDonald, Bob Dylan, John Mayall, Greg Allman, John Scofield, Susan Tedeschi, Keb Mo, Larry Carlton, Mavis Staples, Brad Paisley, and many others.

Robben's first chosen instrument was the saxophone at age ten, and he began to teach himself guitar at age thirteen upon hearing the two guitarists from The Paul Butterfield Blues Band, Michael Bloomfield, and Elvin Bishop.

"I fell in love with the sax-playing of Paul Desmond and The Dave Brubeck Quartet, and before long found Ornette Coleman, Archie Shepp, YusefLateef, Roland Kirk, John Coltrane, Wayne Shorter, and of course, Miles Davis." These influences have stayed with Robben, playing a large part in the particular blend of jazz and blues that defines him as a guitarist and allows him to play in a wide variety of settings.

"Jazz Group of the Year" nominee, THE LAO TIZER BAND, returns to Lake Mission Viejo for JAZZFEST 2022! This world-renowned jazz fusion powerhouse group features an all-star lineup of musicians. Led by pianist, composer, and arranger Lao Tizer, the ensemble also features the soulful vocals of Tita Hutchison and its other regular collaborators: three-time Emmy-winning and Grammy Award-nominated guitarist and composer ChieliMinucci, Grammy Award-winning saxophonist Eric Marienthal, longtime member and EWI/saxophonist/multi-instrumentalist Steve Nieves, and virtuoso violinist Karen Briggs, along with a powerhouse rhythm section: bass players include Grammy Award-nominee RicFierabracci, and CheikhNDoye, Grammy Award-nominated drummer Gene Coye, and percussionist Munyungo Jackson.

Lao Tizer's career spans nine albums and over nearly a quarter of a century of touring. Ultimately, Lao Tizer eschews being formulaic. "I try and just stay true to my muse and to use every bit of my facility to create great music that hopefully has its own voice and continues to evolve as I continue to evolve as a person. It's very reflective of me; it's all I've done all my life."
