Fishing Lake Mission Viejo
Current Fishing Contitions - Updated 7/26/23
Due to reduced negative effects of Golden Algae in Lake Mission Viejo, our biology department noticed improvement in fish survivability through the beginning of July. This allowed is to introduce several hundred tilapia and catfish on 7/20/23 for small test stocking. To date, the fish are healthy and dispersing throughout the lake. A school of tilapia established themselves in Spillway Cove (close to the dam) days after the stocking. Several members have been successful in catching both the tilapia and catfish.
Current water temps range between 81-85 degrees with visibility at 10 to 11 feet. Several tilapia have been caught on white mini-jigs, tipped with worms. As always, try to keep your fishing gear on the “lighter” side; 2-4 lb test lines, smaller hooks & swivels and try cutting large nightcrawler worms in half or thirds. Try using fluorocarbon fishing line instead of traditional monofilament. Fluorocarbon line sinks faster and is more invisible underwater than monofilament. These tilapia are not quite comfortable in their new environment and are very spooky/skittish, so small baits & tackle are your best bet. The fish cleaning room will be open daily for members’ use.
All fishing rules still apply and will be actively enforced.
Fishing boats are available for rent at the Tackle Box.
